Maya Jade Bead Necklace with Cinnabar Traces

$1,250.00

Maya

Mexico and Guatemala

250 to 550 CE

Jade

Length 26 inches (66 cm)

Provenance: Marc Schmitt, Circleville, Ohio; Louis Amiguet, Indiana, 1960s; Raul Kamffer, Mexico City and New York, 1960s

The strand runs through the full range of Mesoamerican jade colour, from pale cream and grey through mottled sage to a deep near black green, with the beads varying in form from short rondelles to long tapered tubes and barrels. The surfaces carry mineral and soil deposits from burial, settled into the drill holes and the low points of each bead, and traces of red cinnabar remain on several of them. The beads are graduated so the longest tubes sit at the front and the smallest rondelles run toward the back, and the strand measures 26 inches.
