Maya Jade Chief Pendant with Round Eye Forms

$2,100.00

Maya

Guatemala

Circa 500 to 800 AD

Jade

Height 2 3/8 inches

Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaii; Arte Primitivo, New York, Lot 101, December 9, 2013

The pendant is carved from a mottled jade fragment in shades of green and cream, with an irregular outline that follows the natural form of the stone. Near the top of the piece, two round relief elements are set side by side, suggesting eyes or ear ornaments. Extensive natural cracking and fissuring runs throughout the stone, visible across much of the surface.

The lower portion of the pendant is more worn and less defined, with softened, rounded relief forms that are difficult to read in detail. The piece is currently displayed on a custom metal mount rather than an original suspension element. It was previously held in a private collection in Honolulu, Hawaii before passing through Arte Primitivo in New York in December 2013.
