Circa 500 to 800 AD
Jade
Height 2 3/8 inches
Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaii; Arte Primitivo, New York, Lot 108, September 29, 2014
The figure is carved from a naturally elongated jade pebble, retaining the smooth, rounded outline of the original stone. A schematic human face is carved into the upper portion, with simplified eyes, nose, and mouth, above a torso and legs rendered in low relief that follow the tapering shape of the stone. The carving is shallow throughout, preserving much of the pebble's original surface.
The jade is mottled green with lighter cream colored inclusions and areas of tan surface staining visible across the stone. The figure stands in a simplified, frontal pose, with the natural pebble shape narrowing toward the base. The piece is currently displayed on a custom metal stand.
