This Maya jade necklace is composed of alternating cylindrical tube beads and rounded disc beads in varying tones of green and grey jade, centering on three carved jade pendants — a central face mask flanked by two smaller carved figures — all in deeply weathered green jade with traces of earth encrustation. The tube beads range from deep green to pale celadon, and the overall composition reflects the careful selection and arrangement of jade that characterized Classic period Maya prestige adornment. The necklace comes with distinguished early provenance, having been collected in Mexico during the 1920s by Jean Charlot, the French-Mexican artist and muralist who worked alongside Diego Rivera, and subsequently held by his wife Zomah Charlot in Honolulu.
