This mold-made clay rattle dates to the Late Classic period, when figural rattles were produced in significant numbers across lowland Maya sites. The Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles dealt in pre-Columbian material through the mid-twentieth century, and Stendahl inventory numbers on pieces provide a traceable pre-1970 provenance. The surface retains clear definition from the mold.
Mold production allowed Maya workshops to achieve consistent figural forms while preserving fine surface detail in the casting. Rattles of this type served ritual and performative functions, with figural subjects drawn from the Maya pantheon and the ceremonial life of the court.
