Maya Stucco Maize God Head with Elongated Form

$4,500.00

Maya

Guatemala

500 to 800 AD

Stucco plaster

Height 11 inches

Provenance: J. Martinez, San Diego, California; Allen Stone, New York, acquired in the 1960s

The head is a fragment of molded stucco, broken at the top and sides, with no headdress, ears, or hair surviving on the piece. The face has an elongated, oval shape with closed or downcast eyes, a straight nose, and full lips, features consistent with the elongated cranial imagery associated with Maize God portraiture in Classic Maya art. Traces of red pigment remain across the nose, cheeks, and mouth area.

The surrounding surface is a pale cream to tan tone, consistent with aged stucco plaster. The piece was likely once affixed to an architectural wall or facade before being broken from its original context. It was previously held by J. Martinez of San Diego, California, and Allen Stone of New York, who acquired it in the 1960s, predating modern cultural property legislation.
