Maya, Mexico
600–900 AD
Mold-made clay with dark slip
Height 5¾ inches (14.6 cm), width 4½ inches (11.4 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Oceanside, California, prior to 1970
This standing figural rattle depicts a warrior or ceremonial figure wearing a domed helmet headdress, with both arms raised and hands open in a gesture of presentation or supplication. The body is decorated with a dark spotted slip applied over the terracotta ground, creating a textured surface across the chest and torso. A horizontal belt and banded skirt are modeled in relief, and a sound hole is visible at the center of the torso.
The raised-arm posture is associated in Late Classic Maya figural ceramics with performers, supplicants, or figures engaged in ritual address. The spotted decoration may reference jaguar skin or a specific ceremonial costume. The Oceanside, California provenance prior to 1970 establishes collection before the UNESCO Convention benchmark.
