Mayan Late Classic Mold-Made Clay Rattle
Maya, Mexico
600–900 AD
Mold-made clay
Height 4¾ inches (12 cm), width 3½ inches (8.9 cm)
Provenance: Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, No. 2693
This mold-made clay rattle dates to the Late Classic period, when figural rattles were produced in significant numbers across lowland Maya sites. The Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles was among the most significant dealers of pre-Columbian material in the United States through the mid-twentieth century, and Stendahl inventory numbers on pieces provide a traceable pre-1970 provenance. The surface retains clear definition from the mold and the clay body is intact.
Mold production allowed Mayan workshops to achieve consistent figural forms while preserving fine surface detail in the casting. Rattles of this type served ritual and performative functions, with figural subjects drawn from the Mayan pantheon and the ceremonial life of the court. The Stendahl Gallery number 2693 confirms passage through one of the landmark collecting sources for early pre-Columbian material.
