Mexico
1950s
Color woodcut, signed presentation print
Image Height 4 3/4" Width 6 1/2"; with archival frame Height 9 3/4" Width 11 3/4"
Provenance: Private collection, San Francisco, CA
This signed color woodcut by Jean Charlot depicts a seated woman bent over her mending, a stack of round vessels beside her rendered in warm browns against a purple garment. Charlot, a French born artist central to the Mexican mural movement of the 1920s, carried its interest in Indigenous labor and daily life into his prints, and here he treats an ordinary domestic task with monumental calm. The bold outlines and flat color areas show his command of the woodcut medium and his lifelong attention to the working people of Mexico.
The composition reduces the scene to a few strong shapes, the woman's lowered head and working hands anchoring the design. As a signed presentation print it represents the fine printmaking Charlot pursued alongside his murals and book illustration. Charlot later settled in Hawaii, and works from this period connect his Mexican subjects to the wider circle of collectors who followed him there.
