Mexican Broadside Gloria al Ejercito, Relief Print

$700.00

Mexican, circa 1915

Relief print and letterpress on paper

19 1/2 x 16 inches (49.5 x 40.6 cm) including frame

Provenance: Posada family, Mexico City

The sheet is headed GLORIA AL EJÉRCITO in heavy display capitals set to either side of a relief cut showing a crowd of figures massed on and below a long balcony, with a band and standing officers among them, and a second line beneath reads ¡Viva el Ejército Nacional! The verses run in three columns of small letterpress across the upper half, ruled off by thin vertical lines, and the lower half is printed in flat red carrying a further cut of soldiers ranked in close rows above a band of scrolling ornament. The paper has toned to a warm buff with the red still strong, the impression bites unevenly where the cut has taken more ink at the left, and the sheet is float mounted behind a linen mat in a black and gilt frame.
