Mexican
Mexico
Circa mid 19th century
Carved coconut
Length 5 1/4 inches
Provenance: Private collection, London
This coconut is carved in relief across its whole surface and holds a deep brown polished patina. One face carries the Mexican national seal, an eagle with spread wings perched on a cactus and grasping a serpent, framed within a laurel wreath and flanked by a trophy of flags and staffs. The surrounding panels hold standing figures, upright leafy branches, and small oval medallions that each enclose a profile head.
The upper end is carved with a radiating leaf medallion centered on an oval panel containing an upright frond over a basket form. Scrolling foliage and fine hatched borders fill the ground between the panels and run around the seams of the shell. The carving stands in low raised relief against the darkened surface, with the polish deepest across the high points.
