Mexican Ex-Voto Retablo with Prisoner, Oil on Tin

$750.00

Mexico

1910

Oil on tin

Height 13 in (33 cm), Width 7 ½ in (19.1 cm)

Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California

Exhibited: Santa Barbara Museum, 1960s

The lower scene shows a prisoner standing behind the barred door of a jail lettered "POLECIA," a uniformed officer beside him, the whole set against a blue walled building on a cobbled street. Above, a band of saints and the Holy Trinity sit in a cloud register over four souls rising from flames, the earthly plea and the heavenly answer stacked in the two registers typical of the form. The vernacular spelling of the sign, the flattened perspective, and the paint loss across the worn lower edge are all consistent with a hand painted tin ex-voto of the period.
