Mexico
1861
Oil on tin
Height 8 ¾ in (22.2 cm), Width 6 ½ in (16.5 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico
In the lower register two women kneel in prayer before a bench, while above them the Holy Trinity sits on a cloud at the left and Saint Barbara on a cloud at the right, a red bolt of lightning descending along the edge between the earthly and the heavenly scene. The votive text along the base records that on 8 August 1861 a lightning bolt struck while the sisters Juana and Salvadora Armas were seated in their shop with the girl Dolores Días, and that, having called on the Most Holy Trinity and Saint Barbara, they were left unharmed and dedicated this retablo in thanks. Saint Barbara is the saint invoked against lightning and sudden death, which fits the event exactly, and the flattened perspective, direct handling, and paint loss along the edges are all consistent with a hand painted tin ex-voto of the mid nineteenth century.
