Feather, paint, and paper in gilt frames
Height 7 1/4 inches (18.4 cm), width 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) each, including original frames
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, before 1960
Two small pictures worked in applied feather, each showing figures standing on a dark ground between plants that rise on either side of the composition. In the first, two men in broad brimmed hats stand side by side, one leaning on a staff and the other carrying a rolled bundle and a second hat, both wearing patterned wraps over pale trousers, with a hat and a further object laid at their feet. In the second, a single man carries a tall wooden frame on his back loaded with a jar and other goods, a white fleece across his shoulders and a red skirt over pale leggings, with a stick in his hand.
The feathers are cut and laid to build up each element separately, the plants worked in green with the vane of the feather left visible as the leaf, the ground in dark barbs laid to give texture, and the figures assembled from small pieces with the faces and hands painted. Both remain in their original gilt frames.
