Our Lady of the Rosary, Mexican, Oil on Copper

$4,500.00

Mexico

18th century

Oil on copper, in a metal frame

Height 3 ¼ in (8.3 cm), Width 2 ¾ in (7 cm)

Provenance: London trade

The Virgin sits crowned at the centre with the Christ Child on her knee, a blue mantle over a red robe, and extends a rosary in her right hand. A ring of winged cherub heads surrounds the pair, banked close on every side and worked in the same warm palette against the darkened ground. The copper support holds the pigment in a compact, luminous field, and the paint is well preserved across the faces and drapery.

The panel is set in a canted corner metal frame with a twisted rope edge and a suspension loop at the top, mounting the image to be hung or held rather than displayed as a larger retablo. The scale, the copper support, and the Rosario subject mark it as an object made for private devotion. Wear is consistent with age and handling, with the loop and frame intact.
