1900

Oil on tin

Height 10 in (25.4 cm), Width 7 in (17.8 cm)

Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California

Exhibited: Santa Barbara Museum, 1960s

The lower register centres on a flaming heart topped by a cross, with lambs gathered around it and streams of blood running down to join the group, the emblems of Christ's sacrifice set out plainly for devotion. Above, holy figures look down from a bank of cloud, linking the earthly emblems below to the heavenly register in the two-part arrangement typical of the form. The direct handling, the flat ground, and the surface wear are all consistent with a hand painted tin retablo of about 1900.
