The panel is built around a cross laid over a deep blue ground, God the Father at the summit with arms spread above a row of cherub heads, the dove of the Holy Spirit below him, and Christ crucified at the center of the crossbar. A red faced sun and a white faced moon occupy the ends of the arm, and the black field between them is filled with the instruments of the Passion, the column and the seamless robe, the chalices, the ladder, the hammer and pincers, the cock, and the dice. Beneath the cross the Virgin stands in a blue mantle with her hands crossed at her breast, an angel below her, and three small scenes are set in a row across the base: Adam and Eve at the tree, a monstrance with the host above a scattering of rosary beads, and Death as a skeleton with a scythe reclining on a bed.
Ranged across the blue ground on both sides are the souls in purgatory, half length figures rising from red flames with their hands joined in prayer, and two of them are named in the paint below, Romualdo and Alvina. Along the bottom edge runs the petition that the whole panel exists to carry, asking for an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the souls of Feliciano, Gregoria, Marcelino, and Tomasa. Panels of this kind were commissioned by a family for named dead rather than made for sale, which is why the inscription and not the imagery is the part that identifies the object.
