Saint Isidore the Farmer, Mexican Oil on Panel

$850.00

Mexican
Early 19th century

Oil on panel

Height 15 1/4" (38.7 cm) x Width 10 1/2" (26.7 cm)

Provenance: Steve Farr, Dallas, TX

This Mexican oil on panel depicts Saint Isidore the Farmer, patron saint of agricultural laborers and of several Spanish cities, shown as a standing figure in embroidered clothing with a staff, cattle visible in the background landscape, consistent with the iconographic convention of the saint at work in the fields attended by angels who plow on his behalf. The painting follows the popular devotional type widely produced in Mexico and Spain from the 17th century onward, with the warm palette, flattened perspective, and folk-inflected figure style characteristic of Mexican provincial religious painting of the early 19th century. The panel retains its painted surface with the overall patina and condition expected of period Mexican devotional work.
