Mezcala
Guerrero, Mexico
400 BC to 100 AD
Greenstone
Height 3 1/4 inches
Provenance: Alain Schoffel, Brussels, Belgium; Private Paris collection
The figure is carved from a single block of dark green, mottled greenstone in a compact, upright form. The head is smoothly rounded with no clearly incised facial features, projecting slightly forward to suggest a facial profile. Below a plain torso, the lower body separates into two distinct legs.
The back of the figure is left flat, and the overall compact, vertical shape gives the piece an axe like form typical of Mezcala carving from the Balsas River region of Guerrero, where similar objects were later collected and deposited as offerings at the Templo Mayor by the Mexica. The figure does not stand unaided and is currently held upright by a metal bracket mount. The piece was previously in the Alain Schoffel collection in Brussels, and later in a private Paris collection.
