Mezcala
Guerrero, West Mexico
Circa 100 BC
Serpentine
Height 3 3/4 inches
Provenance: Riverside Gallery, Houston, Texas, 1980s; Dr. Rick Heideman, Albuquerque, New Mexico
The figure is carved in a mottled green serpentine, with a rounded, smooth head set above a fluted, fan shaped collar element formed of vertical ridges. Below the collar, the body is a solid, rectangular mass with squared shoulders, tapering slightly toward the base. The lower body narrows to a small forked or notched edge at the bottom.
The stone displays a rich mottled green tone throughout, with lighter veining and tan colored inclusions visible across the surface. No facial features are carved into the smooth head, consistent with the more abstracted end of Mezcala figural carving. The figure was mounted with a metal support at the neck for display, in addition to the pins securing the base.
