Mimbres, Mogollon
New Mexico, Southwest
Circa 1200 - 1300 AD
Clay with slip and mineral pigment
5 1/2 inches high, 11 3/4 inches diameter (14 x 29.8 cm)
Provenance: Private Arizona collection
A deep hemispherical bowl painted on the interior in black over a white slip, the exterior left unslipped in buff grey with fire clouding. The design turns around the interior in a rotating arrangement of broad solid bands and groups of narrow parallel lines, edged along several margins with a sawtooth border. Set within it are two moths, each drawn as a tapering body with a stepped outline and a pair of curled antennae at the head.
The linework is drawn freehand with a yucca brush, the parallel bands held at even spacing as they narrow toward the center of the bowl. The hawk moth is the principal night pollinator of Datura, a plant of long standing significance in the Southwest, and moths appear in Mimbres painting among the geometric layouts that dominate the ware. The two moths sit at opposite points in the composition, each turned to follow the direction of the bands around it.
