New Mexico

1050 - 1175 AD

Marine shell

Length 58 in / 147 cm

Provenance: Bobby Smrkovsky, Deming, New Mexico

This is an ancient Mimbres strand of marine shell beads, the shells traded inland from the coast and worked into small oval beads. Each shell was ground and drilled by hand and strung into a long single strand, here measuring 58 inches. Marine shell reached the inland Southwest through long distance trade networks, and its presence in Mimbres sites marks the reach of those exchange routes around 1050 to 1175 AD.
