Moche

Peru

900–200 BC

Spondylus shell, jade, stone

Length 20"

Provenance: Steve Nelson, Redondo Beach, CA

This Moche necklace is strung with tightly packed disc beads of orange spondylus shell interspersed with larger rectangular jade and dark stone spacers at intervals along the strand. At the center hang three small frog pendants in spondylus and stone, the frog being a widely significant animal in Andean cosmology associated with water, rain, and agricultural fertility. The combination of spondylus shell and jade reflects the high-value materials that characterized Moche prestige adornment, both obtained through long-distance exchange networks extending along the Pacific coast and into the Andean interior.
