Moche
Peru
900–200 BC
Spondylus shell, blackware ceramic, stone
Length 18"
Provenance: Steve Nelson, Redondo Beach, CA
This Moche necklace is composed of three strands of small spondylus disc beads in orange, red, and multicolor, interspersed with flat black stone spacers at intervals and gathered at the front by a blackware ceramic animal head pendant with a curling tongue or snout element. Additional blackware elements — carved roundels and drop pendants — are suspended from the strands at the sides, giving the necklace a symmetrical, layered appearance. The combination of spondylus shell, black stone, and blackware ceramic reflects the range of prestige materials used in Moche adornment.
