Earthenware with slip decoration, glass bead necklace
Height 9" (22.9 cm) Diameter 8 1/4" (21 cm)
Provenance: Lancaster, PA Trade
Mojave effigy vessels of this type depict a human figure in traditional dress and self decoration, with facial features, body painting, and adornment rendered in slip on the clay surface. This example retains its original glass bead necklace, an element that significantly enhances both the visual presence and the documentary value of the piece. Vessels of this form were produced for sale to travelers at the train stations in Needles and Yuma, Arizona, where they circulated widely from the late nineteenth century onward.
The Mojave were accomplished ceramicists, and the effigy vessel tradition reflects a sophisticated integration of portrait and vessel form that distinguishes their work within the broader Southwest pottery tradition. The painting on this example is detailed and well preserved, with geometric body decoration and clearly articulated facial features conveying the specificity of Mojave adornment practice. It is a well documented and visually compelling example of the form.
