Provenance: Private collection, Tucson, Arizona

Edward Curtis dedicated over two decades to photographing more than 80 Native American tribes, producing The North American Indian (1907–1930), a monumental work of 20 volumes comprising 500 complete sets. This photogravure, plate 10 from Volume 10, depicts Naemahlpunkuma Hahuamis and was printed on vellum paper, the premium substrate used for the finest impressions in the Curtis portfolio. Of the 500 complete sets originally planned, just over 300 were produced, making individual examples genuinely collectible.

The photogravure process gave Curtis's portraits their characteristic warm, continuous tone and fine detail, qualities well suited to the intimate character of this subject. The image is presented in a period frame measuring 14 × 15 inches. Examples from the vellum edition in good condition are sought by collectors of both photography and Native American cultural material.
