Navajo, Hemerson Brown
American Southwest
1970s
Sterling silver
Height 2 1/4 inches, width 3 1/8 inches
Provenance: Private collection, Las Vegas, New Mexico
This rectangular buckle has a gently domed sterling silver face worked entirely in stamp and engraving work with no set stone. At the center a small raised square is ringed by a radiating sunburst of straight engraved lines that fan outward to fill the inner panel. Two rectangular borders frame the design, the inner edged with a fine sawtooth line and the outer carrying a repeating band of scalloped and stepped stamp marks. The silver holds a warm mottled patina that settles into the stamped recesses, and the reverse is stamped sterling beside the maker hallmark and retains its hook and bar hardware for a belt.
