Navajo
American Southwest
1950s
Sterling silver and natural turquoise
Height 2 1/2 inches, width 3 inches
Provenance: Private collection, Mesa, Arizona
This rectangular buckle has a raised stamped border enclosing a darkened recessed field crowded with applied silver elements. A coiled serpent winds across the center, its body carrying a scaled texture and its head resting at the lower right, curving between two turquoise stones set into the field, one a round lighter blue green cabochon and the other an oval blue stone. Around the serpent lie scattered applied silver fragments in irregular shapes, along with two small domed buttons stamped with a sunburst pattern. The silver has darkened deeply in the recesses, throwing the raised serpent and applied pieces into relief against the ground. The reverse is a flat silver sheet retaining its soldered hook and bar hardware for a belt.
