The rectangular face of the ring is set with a geometric channel inlay divided by thin raised lines of silver. Bands of orange spiny oyster fill most of the field, cut by black jet and centered on a triangle of opal that flashes red, green, and blue against the warmer stone. The inlay is signed, and the wide sterling band carries the pattern in a flat, hard-edged design. Built in a US size 13 at just over 20 grams, it is a broad, solid ring made for wear.
Calvin Begay was born in Gallup, New Mexico, in 1965 and raised in Tohatchi in the northwestern part of the state. He works in both silver and gold and is known for channel inlay drawn from Navajo technique. His jewelry has been featured in Arizona Highways and Southwest Art magazines.
