A large freeform teardrop cabochon of blue turquoise, marked throughout with black matrix, is set in a serrated silver bezel at the center of the ring. The bezel rests on a broad silver plaque cut and built up in stepped, terraced forms, its recessed ground stippled and oxidized to set off the polished stone. The piece is signed, and at 48.2 grams in a US size 10 3/4 it is a heavy, architectural ring made for wear.
Charles Johnson was born in 1948 and comes from a multi-generational family of silversmiths, five generations on his mother's side and two on his father's. He learned inlay work at fourteen and silversmithing a year later from his parents. He is known for sterling silver rings and jewelry set with turquoise and worked in inlay, and is of Navajo (Diné), Sioux, Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminole descent.
