Sterling silver and turquoise
Necklace length 22 in / 56 cm
Cross 5 1/2 in / 14 cm
144.2 grams
Hallmarked Chimney Butte
Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico
This Navajo necklace by Chimney Butte centers on a large silver cross set with five long turquoise cabochons, one at each arm and a longer stone down the shaft. The cross is framed with applied silver scrollwork, wire, and stamped silver buttons, and hangs from a stamped silver bail. The necklace is strung as multiple strands of turquoise nuggets that gather at the bail.
The cross form entered Navajo silver through Spanish Catholic influence and was reworked in Southwestern silver and turquoise. The applied scrolls and stamped detail around the stones are characteristic of Chimney Butte's heavier, decorated silverwork. At 22 inches with a 5 1/2 inch cross and just over 144 grams, it is a substantial piece built around the turquoise set cross.
