Sterling silver with multi stone micro inlay, signed
Total circumference 9 in (22.9 cm), width 1 in (2.5 cm); 80.59 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, NM
This Navajo link bracelet is built from hinged sterling panels, each filled with detailed micro inlay of cut stone set flush into the silver. The designs are celestial and geometric, with star filled night skies, fan and feather motifs and stepped fields worked in turquoise, blue, coral, black and white stones against dark grounds. The bracelet is signed and dated 2010.
The panels articulate on hinges so the bracelet moves with the wrist rather than opening as a rigid cuff. At just over 80 grams over a 1 inch width, it is a heavy, substantial piece with dense inlay across every panel. The 9 inch circumference fits a medium to larger wrist, with the length set by the number of links.
Clayton Tom is a contemporary Navajo micro inlay artist, born in Denver, Colorado in 1970 and raised on the Navajo reservation at Tse-Yah-Toh, New Mexico. He graduated from Gallup High School and works in the Gallup area. He is an award winning artist regarded as one of the leading names in Native American micro inlay, a demanding technique of setting many small cut stones flush into silver. His signature designs include celestial night sky scenes and a cosmic bear motif worked in stones such as onyx, turquoise, jasper and opal.
