$1,450.00

Navajo, Southwest

1980s

Sterling silver, turquoise, leather

Eight conchos, each 2 inches by 2 1/4 inches (5.1 by 5.7 cm)

Nine butterflies, each 1 inch by 1 3/4 inches (2.5 by 4.4 cm)

Buckle 2 inches by 3 inches (5.1 by 7.6 cm)

Belt length 54 inches (137.2 cm)

307.69 grams

Signed Lewis Parker

Provenance: Private collection, Taos, New Mexico

The belt carries eight conchos alternating with nine butterfly spacers on a black leather strap, each plaque worked in repoussé with raised lobed forms and framed by serrated and scalloped stamped borders. The buckle spreads to three inches with raised wings sweeping across the face and is set with four oval turquoise cabochons in bright blue with fine black spiderweb matrix, placed at the corners of the open center. Copper loops on the reverse carry the leather beneath the plaques, and at 307 grams the silver is of substantial gauge.

Lewis Parker is a Navajo silversmith whose work is distinguished by the depth of its repoussé and the crispness of its stamped borders. The turquoise here is matched across the buckle in tone and matrix, which is a mark of care in the selection of stones rather than a matter of chance. The belt is signed on the reverse.
