Navajo Concho Belt with Nine Scalloped Oval Plaques

$1,250.00

Navajo, Arizona or New Mexico

1920

Silver, original leather

Nine conchos, each 1 1/4 inches by 2 inches (3.2 by 5.1 cm)

Ten butterflies

Buckle 1 3/4 inches by 2 inches (4.4 by 5.1 cm)

Belt length 38 inches (96.5 cm)

Provenance: Mabel Johnson, Flagstaff, Arizona

Nine small oval conchos alternate with ten butterflies along a narrow leather strap, the conchos worked with a scalloped and punched border enclosing a repousse diamond and paired arcs, and the butterflies formed as fluted fans that swell out from a pinched waist. The stamp work is shallow and repeated by hand rather than cut from a die, and the silver has darkened deeply in the recesses while the raised surfaces have worn bright. The belt survives on its original leather with the buckle intact.
