Navajo Concho Belt with Original Cabinet Photograph

$490.00

Navajo, Arizona or New Mexico

Silver, leather, photograph

Thirteen conchos and one button, each 1 1/8 inches by 1 1/4 inches (2.9 by 3.2 cm)

Buckle 1 1/4 inches by 1 3/8 inches (3.2 by 3.5 cm)

Belt length 39 inches (99.1 cm)

Provenance: Ron Grenko, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Thirteen small oval conchos and a single button run along a russet leather strap, each plaque lightly domed and stamped with a four petal rosette at the center within a border of arcs and paired punch marks. The buckle repeats the pattern at a slightly larger scale, its edge worked with a scalloped rim and a band of chevron file work. The silver is thin and hand stamped, the conchos worn bright across their crowns and darkened in the recesses, and one concho has separated from the strap.

The belt is accompanied by a hand tinted studio photograph of a child wearing it, the belt cinched at the waist over a velvet blouse and yellow skirt, with a turquoise necklace at the throat. The reverse of the photograph is inscribed in ink, Taken 24 August 1935, 1 1/2 years old. The sitter is the previous owner, and the photograph fixes the belt in use in the mid 1930s.
