Navajo, Southwest
1980s
Sterling silver, leather
Seven conchos, each 1 1/2 inches by 3 inches (3.8 by 7.6 cm)
Eight butterflies, each 1 inch by 1 1/2 inches (2.5 by 3.8 cm)
Buckle 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches (5.1 by 6.4 cm)
Belt length 44 inches (111.8 cm)
307.60 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Taos, New Mexico
The belt carries seven conchos alternating with eight butterfly spacers on a black leather strap, each plaque built from heavily raised teardrop forms that radiate outward from a central diamond, standing well proud of the ground with darkened channels between them. The buckle repeats the motif around the open center, with teardrops fanning to either side in graduated sizes. The design relies entirely on volume and shadow rather than on stamping or stone, and at 307 grams the plaques are of substantial gauge.
