Navajo, Arizona or New Mexico
1940s
Sterling silver, leather
Buckle 2 1/4 inches by 3 inches (5.7 by 7.6 cm)
Eight conchos, each 1 1/2 inches by 2 inches (3.8 by 5.1 cm)
Belt length 41 inches (104.1 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Rio Rancho, New Mexico
The buckle is sand cast in an open scrolled design built around a central cross, with curled tendrils and flared leaf forms filling the field and voids left through the casting so the leather shows behind the silver. Eight small oval conchos run along the strap, each with a scalloped edge and radiating file marks around a raised diamond boss cut through at the center where the leather passes. The conchos are mounted directly to a brown leather belt worn smooth at the tongue end.
