Navajo
Southwest
Circa 1920
Wool, vegetal and aniline dyes
35" x 50"
Provenance: Private collection, Taos, NM
This Navajo double saddle blanket is woven on a cream ground with three longhorn bull heads in dark brown arranged across the center field, each rendered with red accents at the nostrils and with stylized wing-like forms at the sides. Two large lightning bolt or arrow forms in dark brown bisect the upper and lower halves of the field, and the four corners are filled with bold stepped and interlocking geometric masses in red, brown, grey, and white. The combination of pictorial animal motifs with geometric corner fills and abstract central devices reflects the inventive compositions weavers developed for the saddle blanket format during this period.
