This heavy Navajo cuff is worked entirely in silver, built around a bold central band of twisted rope that runs the length of the cuff. The rope is flanked by finely stamped bands and plain polished borders, giving a layered, textural surface with no stones. At just over 147 grams on a 3/4 inch width, the cuff is thick and substantial in the heavy gauge silver tradition, and is signed by the maker.
Elvira Bill is a Navajo silversmith from Twin Lakes, New Mexico, the youngest child of silversmiths Emerson Bill and Nora Tahe Bill, who taught her stamping, silversmithing and repoussé. She specializes in heavy gauge silver with deep stampwork, a demanding style that runs in her family and is worked by relatively few women. Before returning to jewelry making she served six years in the US Army as an operating room technician. She signs her work and continues the heavy gauge tradition of her parents.
