Ingot silver and turquoise
Total circumference 7 1/4 in (18.4 cm), gap 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm), width 3/4 in (1.9 cm); 51.40 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Taos, NM
This early Navajo cuff carries four oval turquoise stones in a row, all in a green tone with dark natural matrix and closely matched across the band. Each stone sits in a twisted rope bezel, with round silver drop beads set between and around them and stamped scrollwork worked into the shoulders. The silver is hand wrought from an ingot rather than commercial sheet, a construction consistent with work of the 1920s.
The ingot silver gives the band a dense, slightly irregular surface that a rolled sheet cannot reproduce. At just over 51 grams across a 3/4 inch width, the weight sits in the metal itself rather than in a broad face. The 7 1/4 inch circumference with a 1 1/8 inch gap suits a smaller wrist and adjusts through the open back.
