An oval cabochon is set upright at the center of the ring, cut so that bright blue turquoise runs in ribbons and pockets through a dark brown host rock rather than reading as a solid blue stone. The plain bezel is framed by a twisted silver rope and ringed by round silver beads set in graduated pairs around the outer edge, mounted on a split shank. The piece is signed, and the silver is oxidized in the recesses to set off the beadwork. At 22.86 grams in a US size 11, it is a tall, substantial ring made for wear.
Fritson Toledo was born in September 1961 in Cuba, New Mexico, and has worked as a silversmith for over forty years. He grew up in a family of weavers with a silversmith father, taught himself using his father's tools from the age of eight, and made his first ring at twelve. He later worked as a goldsmith under the Southwest silversmith Les Baker. His work ranges from heavy stampwork to traditional repoussé, and he continues to use his own handmade stamps and tools.
