Navajo (Diné)
Ganado, Arizona, Southwest
1930s
Handspun wool
23 x 35 in
This Navajo rug is woven in handspun wool in the Ganado manner, worked around a large central diamond that fills the field in serrated bands of black, ivory, and camel with a red and ivory cross at its core. The diamond sits on a soft grey ground, framed at each corner and along the edges by small stepped crosses in ivory, and the whole is bordered in deep red with a fine banded stripe along the top and bottom. The corners finish in pale wool tassels, and the weave shows a gentle undulation across the width.
