Navajo Green Turquoise Cuff Stamped Sawtooth Border

$1,400.00

Navajo

Southwest

1920s

Sterling silver and turquoise

Total circumference 7 1/2 in (19.1 cm), gap 1 in (2.5 cm), width 3/4 in (1.9 cm); 29.53 grams

Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, NM

This early Navajo cuff carries a single oval turquoise stone of clear green with light matrix, set off center in a plain bezel on a wide silver band. The band is densely stamped with traditional geometric motifs, including arrows, zigzag lightning lines and a sawtooth border that runs the full length of the cuff. The bold, closely worked stamping is characteristic of Navajo silver from the 1920s.

The single stone is placed to one side, letting the stamped silver field carry most of the visual weight. At just under 30 grams the cuff is relatively light, with its presence coming from the width and depth of the stamp work rather than mass. The 7 1/2 inch circumference with a 1 inch gap suits a medium wrist and adjusts through the open back.

Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
