Circa 1930
Ingot silver with natural turquoise
Interior circumference 8 inches with a 1 1/8 inch gap, band 1 inch wide (20.3 cm, 2.9 cm gap, 2.5 cm wide). Weight 69.94 grams
Provenance: Private Taos collection
A wide cuff hand wrought from ingot silver, domed across its width and tapering to plain rounded terminals. A single oval turquoise sits at the center in a serrated bezel, the stone a soft green with brown matrix running through it. Twisted wire borders run the length of the band on both sides, framing the stamped field between them.
The stamped work is built from curved elements filled with rows of small punched dots, worked outward from the setting in scrolls that meet arcs and chevrons toward the terminals. Ingot silver was poured and hammered by the smith rather than bought as sheet, and the slight variation in the thickness of the band and the depth of the stamping follows from working the metal by hand. The surface carries an even grey patina with oxidation held in the stamped recesses, and wear on the high points and the interior consistent with use.
