Ingot silver and turquoise

Total circumference 7 1/2 in (19.1 cm), gap 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm), width 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm); 53.68 grams

Provenance: Robert Riggs, Santa Barbara, CA

This early Navajo cuff is hand wrought from ingot silver, its wide band finished with raised rim borders that frame a stamped central panel. A single oval turquoise stone, blue with brown spiderweb matrix, sits in a plain bezel at the center, flanked by repoussé leaf motifs and sunburst stamps. The heavy ingot band and hand cut stamp work are characteristic of Navajo silver of the 1920s, made from silver rolled by hand rather than commercial sheet.

The raised borders give the panel depth and contain the stamped design neatly along the band. At just over 53 grams the cuff is solid and substantial on the wrist. The single stone and symmetrical leaf stamping make for a balanced, early front.
