Navajo Lonn Parker Inlay Overlay Silver Cuff Bracelet
Navajo
Southwest
1990s
Sterling silver with turquoise, lapis, coral and sugilite, signed
Total circumference 9 in (22.9 cm), gap 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm), width 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm); 147.14 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, NM
This heavy Navajo cuff combines channel inlay with silver overlay, the two techniques set side by side across the band. A diagonal band of graduated channel inlay runs through the center, worked in lapis, coral, sugilite, turquoise and other stones cut to fit between thin silver dividers. To each side, silver overlay panels carry scrolling curvilinear motifs against a darkened, oxidized ground.
At just under 147 grams across a 1 1/4 inch width, the cuff is heavy and substantial, in the thick gauge silver Parker is known for. The combination of Zuni style inlay and Hopi style overlay on one band reflects his range across techniques. It is signed by the maker and dates to the 1990s.
Lonn Parker is a Navajo silversmith, born in 1958 in Denver and based at Manuelito, New Mexico. He was introduced to silverwork at age eleven, buffing silver at the Gallup Indian Trading Company, and is largely self taught. He works across overlay, stone inlay and tufa casting, and is known for his twist bracelets, which carry inlay on one side and overlay on the reverse. He was the first silversmith to serve as artist in residence at the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, and was commissioned to make a belt buckle and bolo tie set for President George W. Bush.
