$2,200.00

Navajo

Southwest

1930

Sterling silver and natural turquoise

Total circumference 8 1/2 in (21.6 cm), gap 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm), width 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm); 67.52 grams

Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, NM

This Navajo cuff is massed with oval turquoise cabochons across a wide silver band, the stones set close together in plain bezels to fill the front. A larger center stone is framed by twisted rope wire, with the surrounding ovals arranged in a clustered field above and below it. The turquoise is natural and varies from blue to green, each stone showing its own tone and matrix within the closely packed group.

Stamped fan and sawtooth borders run along the top and bottom edges of the band, framing the field of stones. At just over 67 grams across a 1 1/2 inch width, the cuff is heavy and broad, a substantial statement piece. The 8 1/2 inch circumference with a 1 1/8 inch gap suits a larger wrist and adjusts through the open back.

Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
