An elongated oval cabochon of green turquoise, veined with brown and gold matrix, is set upright at the center of the ring in a gold bezel. Fine radiating lines cross the face of the stone in a star-burst that opens from a single point, the motif most associated with Naveek's work. The green body and warm matrix give each segment of the star-burst its own tone.
The setting sits on a split shank of three silver bands, with stepped and serrated shoulders flanking the stone. Sterling silver is combined with 18kt gold in the mount, and the ring weighs 19.99 grams in a US size 9 1/4. Built at that scale, it is a substantial ring made to be worn rather than kept for display.
Naveek was born at Fort Defiance, Arizona, and raised near Standing Rock on the Navajo Reservation and in Gallup, New Mexico. He learned silversmithing from his grandfather, Tom A. Lewis, a Navajo medicine man and traditional silversmith, and works under the professional name Naveek in reference to his Navajo and Greek ancestry. The Indian Arts and Crafts Association named him Artist of the Year in 1993. He is known for a complex channel inlay technique and a recurring star-burst motif, worked in silver and gold with precious and semi-precious stones, and his jewelry is held in galleries across the country.
