Navajo
American Southwest
1970s
Sterling silver and turquoise
Height 2 1/8 inches, width 2 3/4 inches, 50.33 grams
Provenance: Acquired through trade in Albuquerque, New Mexico
This oval buckle is built around an openwork star design, with cast silver bars radiating from the center into pointed rays and open cutouts between them. An oval turquoise sits at the middle, a blue stone crossed with brown matrix, held in a bezel wrapped with twist wire and ringed by small drop beads and curled scroll wires. The oval border is stamped with a fine sawtooth line that runs around the edge, and the silver has darkened to a deep gray patina across the recesses. The reverse shows the openwork from behind and carries a stamped maker hallmark along with hand inscribed collection numbers. It retains its hook and bar hardware for a belt.
