This Navajo pictorial rug depicts a large white Christian cross rising above a white pulpit, below which an open Bible is rendered in white and cream with red and black binding against a brown ground field. The outer border is black with a sawtooth pattern in white on both sides, and a cream inner border frames the central pictorial field. Navajo weavers began incorporating Christian missionary imagery into their pictorial work in the early 20th century, and rugs depicting crosses, churches, and Bibles are a recognized type within the Navajo pictorial tradition.
